Eddie Howe - Our generations Brian Clough
Listening to the Big Interview podcast with Eddie Howe made me wonder; is Eddie Howe the Brian Clough of our times?
Let’s face it, there are some striking similarities, each had a solid and loving family upbringing; as ex-players both became managers around their 30th birthday, supported by a strong-willed No 2’s in Peter Taylor and Jason Tindall.
Listening to Howe talk about the importance of talking and listening to players, explaining his views and what he expects of them, made think of Clough.
When asked about when someone from his playing staff says, ‘boss, I think you’re doing this wrong’ Clough famously responded:
‘Well, then I ask him which way he thinks it should be done. We get down to it, and talk about it for 20 minutes and then we decide I was right.”
Although the culture of management has changed over the generations, there are similarities with Clough and Howe’s way.
Both make decisive decisions.
